RO Membrane

Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a pressure-driven separation process. It uses a semipermeable membrane and functions on the principles of cross flow filtration. Reverse osmosis water treatment has the finest level of filtration.

The RO membrane is effective in blocking salts and inorganic molecules and even organic molecules with a molecular weight of more than 100. It is effective in removing contaminants like:

  • Endotoxins/ pyrogens
  • Insecticides/pesticides
  • Herbicides
  • Nitrates
  • Soluble salts
  • Antibiotics
  • Sugars
  • Metal ions

RO membrane performance is affected by several factors such as:

  • The temperature of feed water
  • pH balance of the feed water
  • salt concentration
  • operation parameters
  • concentration polarization

UF Membrane

Compared to traditional filtration technologies that use a screen or filter to remove particles, ultrafiltration (UF) is a pressure-driven water purification process that uses an ultrafine membrane to separate particulate matter from soluble compounds. It is used in reverse osmosis pretreatments, desalination pretreatment, wastewater reclamation, and producing potable water.

Ultrafiltration membranes have pore sizes from 0.02 to 0.05 microns, which contributes to the production of high-quality water. Our Hydranautics ultrafiltration modules incorporate PVDF hollow fiber membranes and are an excellent choice to protect downstream processes such as reverse osmosis. They are effective for removing viruses, bacteria, suspended solids, colloids, and pathogens from water.

When used as a pretreatment for reverse osmosis, UF also helps to reduce the fouling of the reverse osmosis membranes. This helps to reduce chemical cleaning frequency and operate RO at higher flux.

NF Membrane

Nanofiltration is liquid separation technology that uses a membrane as well. It shares many characteristics with reverse osmosis. However, unlike RO which rejects all dissolved solutes, nanofiltration has a high rejection of multivalent ions like calcium and low rejection of monovalent ions like chloride. Organic molecules with molecular weights greater than 200-400 are rejected.

Nanofiltration membranes can effectively reject contaminants like:

  • Dissolved organics
  • Endotoxins/pyrogens

  • Nitrates
  • Sugars
  • Latex emulsions
  • Metal ions

As nanofiltration membranes offer a greater selectivity of ions as compared to reverse osmosis membranes, they provide flexibility in separation process development that can impact performance greatly. Some applications of our NF membrane technology in industrial/ wastewater treatment are:
